24 week bumpdate

The last few days have been all about getting this kid through the cold he’s been fighting.

He had to be picked up from daycare on Tuesday because of a fever. So then I stayed home with him all day yesterday, thinking he was getting through the worst of it…until we got the same call again today. Poor buddy.

I learned yesterday that staying home all day gives me dangerously easy access to the kitchen. Hello, chocolate peanut butter energy bites that I made a TRIPLE BATCH of last weekend (and cleaned up yesterday).

It doesn’t help that we have a huge variety of snacky food in our house right now. Last week, NatureBox sent me their new “Must Have” snack box, created in partnership with a POPSUGAR (aka one of my favorite companies on the planet).

The variety was incredible–my box included dried peaches, a trail mix, lemon pucker pistachios, seaweed rice pops, and my absolute favorite: blueberry almond bites (WOW–those didn’t last a day).

NatureBox currently has over 100 snacks to choose from, all of them completely free of artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners. They also work with nutritionists to make sure they’re offering wholesome, quality snacks that are colorful and flavorful.

Some other snacks I’d love to try: coffee kettle popcorn, salted caramel pretzel pops, pistachio power clusters, dark chocolate berry trail mix, peanut butter nom noms, and vanilla macaroon granola.

I’m sure it’s a total coincidence that those are all sweet options…(you can choose sweet, salty, or savory).

And hey–these could make for some great hospital food at baby time!

Speaking of the baby…we’re at 24 weeks!

I’m not sure why I look so puffy and weird in that picture. I seriously don’t even recognize myself.

Maybe it’s the dress–the grungy tank top/yoga pants bathroom-selfie is much more my style:

Either way, there’s the bump, and it’s definitely doing its thing! Here’s the lowdown on 24 (almost 25) weeks:

I’m in the pregnancy sweet spot! The horrors of the first trimester are long gone, and some quirks that popped up in the second semester (mostly horrible round ligament pain and heartburn) are fizzling out too. My skin is clear, I have tons of energy, and outside of the old belly, it’s like I’m not even pregnant.

Oh, but there is one little nagging issue: nasty blue spider veins on ONE ankle. The other ankle is perfectly clear. Why??

Other details…

Sleep: Going great! Despite the middle-of-the-night bathroom breaks (usually just one).

I think I have things easier than some preggos because I’ve been sleeping primarily on my left side for years, so I never miss stomach/back sleeping. I’ve also never really felt the need to buy one of those body pillows lots of pregnant women swear by, but maybe I don’t know what I’m missing??

Appetite: Raging. Eating all the things. Especially the sweet things.

Honestly, I’m trying to rein it in, but now I remember why it’s so easy to pack on extra pounds during pregnancy. Our bodies just love that extra padding!

Weight gain: Probably up around 15+ pounds, although I haven’t checked super recently. This has actually leveled out a bit over the lasts few weeks, which is kind of nice because I was starting to get slightly worried about the steady upward climb on the scale. I still have that whole third tri to get through!

Workouts: Going great. Still focusing a lot on the glutes and core (which I think are so important for a both a healthy pregnancy and recovery), but also doing a lot of arms lately. Because how awesome is it when you see a pregnant woman with randomly ripped arms?

Um, that is, how awesome would it be…I’m mostly shooting for “not too flabby” myself.

Movement: Tons. I have the situation where the placenta is in the front, so I don’t see tiny fists flying out of my stomach or anything, but there’s definitely plenty of activity in there.

I try not to get too wrapped up in the movement thing, because it’s easy to get freaked out if you don’t feel anything for X period of time. But I’ve definitely had a few days where I’ve gone to bed thinking, “Wait. Has he kicked today?”

Baby room prep: Still at a big fat zero progress on this. I’m not in a huge hurry–partially because I’ll have to give up my home desk for the new crib (which we don’t have yet), and partially because…I don’t know, isn’t August SO far away??

Looking forward to: Meeting this little guy.

Those words mean something so different to me this time around, because as much as I was excited to meet Mason, I was also pretty excited just to see what it was like to have a baby. There were way more unknowns, and much more focus on having “a baby” than “this baby.”

This time, it’s all about how will he be different than Mason?

Before we found out the gender, there was a chance that we’d have a girl and see a whole new side of parenting just because of that difference. But now that we know we’re having another boy, the focus is entirely on personality and–for better or for worse?–comparison to kid #1.

Plus, of course, I’m dying to know what he’ll look like. Will I get a kid with my brown hair/eyes, or another blondie with blues??

Not looking forward to: My glucose test tomorrow (to test for gestational diabetes). Given my massive sweet kick lately, I’m seriously concerned about passing this thing.

For those of you not familiar, the test involves drinking a giant, sugary orange drink, waiting an hour, and then getting a blood test to see how your body handles all the sugar. Despite being loaded with sugar, the drink is somehow totally revolting–and hello, I’d rather spend those sugary calories on something I’ll actually enjoy. Right??

So that’s where we’re at this week!

In other news, I’m also feverishly working on my prenatal fitness certification. Expect to hear more about that very soon!

I’ve heard some conflicting advise about the diabetes test – sometimes those that follow a really clean diet (like no added sugars and stuff) sometimes will get a false positive because it shocks their system – but on the other hand, my mom got a semi false positive one day as she ate a lot of a sugary dessert the day before too, so no real advice there!

For me with pregnancy, I just always wake up so swollen face wise no matter what I do!
