A spring weekend

by Kim on March 31, 2014

FINALLY: a real spring weekend!

We saw temps *almost* hit 60 yesterday, and it was pure heaven. (I mean, in a still-kinda-chilly way…it’s a beggars v. choosers thing right now.)

I kicked off the weekend with a fresh (much needed) cut & color. I tried to take a picture of it in the car afterwards, but I ended up just looking creepy…and you can’t even see the color that well…

You’ll have to take my word for it I guess.

That afternoon, while Mason was napping, I headed to a coffee shop to work on some freelance writing stuff. That’s where I learned what a coffee frappe was (blended coffee with milk)–and also that I like them, a lot.

It was still in the 30’s to low-40’s that day, but crazy sunny, so the park was the only place for our cabin fevered kid.

All of a sudden, he’s comfortable going down the big slide by himself. When did that happen?

That nasty yellow stuff on the ground behind him is what we Midwesterners call “progress.”

Next, Brent got a random itch to do some bowling (he’s trying to break his goal of 200), so we walked the quarter mile or so over to the bowling alley.

Mason was really confused about why he couldn’t pick the balls up.

An unexpected highlight of the trip: watching the racecar promo reel in the arcade, over and over.

Kid LOVES his cars.

Saturday night, we watched my alma mater make it to the Final Four. (Go Badgers!! But my brackets are a MESS!)

Sunday morning started with church, then I headed downtown during Mason’s nap to meet up with my friend Kyla for lunch.

We both got the same ginormous salads from Cosi. Just look at this beauty:

And a raspberry mojito lemonade on the side! I wish I could do that whole meal over right now.

Afterwards, we strolled down State Street (aka my old college stomping grounds), window shopping and talking about how young all the college kids looked. Seriously, you should have heard some of the Old Lady Talk coming out of my mouth. Along the lines of “can you believe what kids are wearing right now? The high-waisted shorts and mega-cropped flowy tops and dresses from the 1800’s?”

I’m mortified just thinking about how I sounded to those kids. Haha.

As soon as I got home, it was time to turn around for another adventure: the zoo!

We met up with some friends whose son is right around Mason’s age (and they’re expecting #2 shortly before us!).

The boys loooved it. Mason was literally running laps around exhibits, totally crazed by sun and warmth.

Huge perk of spring: I can FINALLY take decent pictures with my phone again! Oh natural light, I love you.

We had to drag him out of there literally kicking and screaming when they closed at 5. Can’t blame him.

I’m not sure who slept the hardest in our house last night. I haven’t been that active on a weekend in–geez–MONTHS.

Does anyone else feel 90 around college kids?

What’s something you did over the weekend?

Favorite coffee beverage?

Have a great week!

P.S. I’m linking up with Katie for MIMM!

P.P.S. The new blog design is officially DONE and ready for its big reveal this week…!

And always make sure it’s 100% organic (some companies load their superfood up
with Niacin and other non-organic components — go for the
organic green superfood and avoid the Niacin hangover).

If you choose diet shakes, be careful to choose those
containing more fiber with less sugar. Blueberries Chock filled with anti-oxidants and also phytoflavinoids, Blueberries are also high in potassium as
well as ascorbic acid.

your blog. I too am an aspiring blog bloyger but I’m still new to the whole thing.
Do you have any tips for beginner blog writers? I’d genuinely appreciate it.

I had no idea that a coffee frappe involved that and now I want one. Thanks, Kim! Freelance writing seems so intriguing, especially since I hear/read a lot of about it from other bloggers lately! I cannot wait for spring to hit here in Ontario. I swear that it is never coming though. I opened the front door this morning expecting it to not give me instant-chills, but no such luck. I don’t know how many more times I’ll have to explain why I’m SO over winter until it actually leaves me the hell alone.

Haha! I’m laughing out loud at your old lady comments as I was out Friday night feeling so old as all the college girls strolled past in their mini skirts. AKA, long shirts that should have leggings under them. The Hubby and I were getting a kick out of it and discussing how old we felt. Definitely felt old the next day too when I woke up exhausted. Looks like a fun busy weekend for sure! Glad you got some sunshine!

Emily @SinfulNutrition March 31, 2014 at 5:24 pm

Ohmygosh you’ve got me wanting a coffee frappe so bad! I forgot about those things over this long and cold winter. But even in this dreary cold and rainy weather, I could so go for one!

Kim March 31, 2014 at 4:56 pm

I met a group of fraternity/sorority kids the other day because they are renting our venue for their formal mixer this weekend. I could easily be any of their mom and it did make me feel sort of old. But then I look and realize that I’m in better shape than most of them so I don’t feel so bad:)
Glad y’all had such a fun weekend.

It hit 60 for the first time in 2014 today and I LOVE it! Seriously- it’s awesome! I feel sort of old around college students, but sometimes it’s hard to remind myself that I’m really not in college anymore (and haven’t been for awhile!)

Katie @ Daily Cup of Kate March 31, 2014 at 3:55 pm

I seriously said the same thing about “kids” fashion to my sister on Sunday…high shorts and cropped tops are just not my thing apparently.

Katie March 31, 2014 at 3:21 pm

Haha, i was at a bar on Saturday afternoon/evening with friends and at 9:30 we agreed it was time to go home and put on pjs.

Kristin @ A Mom on the Run March 31, 2014 at 3:02 pm

Oh gosh yes, I feel SO old sometimes. Some of my cousins are teenagers and I am shocked when I see what they wear.. and what their parents allow!

We got a new puppy this weekend!!

My favorite coffee drink is a raspberry mocha or salted caramel mocha. So bad for me, but so good!

Katie @ running4cupcakes March 31, 2014 at 3:01 pm

I routinely run around the local college and every year I will come home from the first run after the school year has started and tell Scott for about 20 minutes about everything I saw and how I am pretty sure they are letting 10 year olds get into college now! :)
