A surprise day off and my top prenatal fitness tips

Hey guys! So I basically took a day off from everything yesterday, and it was pretty awesome. (The fact that it was smack in the middle of the week somehow made it feel about 50X more treat-like.)

My cousin Sara was visiting, and we spent the whole day just hanging out. I showed her a few of the local sights, which included a trip to the lakeside terrace and a stroll downtown (huge perk: being out on a random Wednesday morning = zero crowds). We stopped at all the little kitschy shops to look at all the little kitschy things (that we’d never actually buy—sorry, kitschy shops), and it was totally relaxing and amazing.

Found @ Urban Outfitters, where I also saw the most perfect infinity scarf ever. (I couldn’t find it online, but it’s similar to this.) I’ve been trying to become a Scarf Girl, but I’m too picky and weird about them…if they’re infinities, they’re always either too long or short, and if they’re not, then I don’t know how to wear them and spend the whole day adjusting and poking at them. Can you believe the hardship of my life?

I used to think I was at least not totally lost in the fashion world, until I watched Project Runway the other night…I could have sworn the judges were going to love everything they ended up hating, and vice versa.

So my fashion confidence has basically been shattered. And I didn’t buy the scarf.

Yesterday’s lunch downtown was a salad with beets, candied oranges, and blue cheese—a seriously tasty, pretty pile of goodness. And for dessert, well, of COURSE:


Coconut + strawberry fro yo might be my best combo yet.

In typical Girls’ Day style, we topped off all the shopping and eating with pedicures. I hadn’t gotten one in years—literally years—and had completely forgotten how heavenly they can be.


I felt bad for the poor guy who had to massage my nasty pregnant vericose-vein-covered ankle (just one ankle! totally baffles me), but it was super appreciated—I need all the help I can get in the blood flow department right now.

(I knew it was getting bad when Mason pointed at my ankle the other day and said, “PURPLE!”)

In other news, tonight is the LAST night (somehow? already?) of my 6-week prenatal fitness class. (Well, it was supposed to be anyway…we were going to meet Tuesday for a make-up class, but ended up getting rained out, so we still need to make up that make-up class.)

But tonight’s event has been in the works for awhile, and we’re going out with a bang: a 45-minute prenatal yoga class in a beautiful outdoor garden (led by a certified instructor, not me—I know my limits!) followed by a little party at a local activewear store. I’m bringing refreshments for the party and giving a little talk on prenatal fitness, and the store owners were kind enough to offer some special giveaways and discounts to the attendees.

The topics for my talk are pretty basic—I’m going to cover:

  • Reasons to work out when you’re pregnant
  • 5 tips to optimize your prenatal fitness routine

I’m trying to avoid boring stuff everyone’s heard a million times, like drink lots of water and get enough sleep. My tips are things like incorporating lots of squats (here’s why), breathing with the diaphragm, and knowing the specific areas you need to watch during pregnancy to maintain good posture/alignment.

There’s also my #1 tip: just keep moving. I’m a huge fan of the ol’ “energy begets energy” concept, and it’s totally worked for me this pregnancy. I’m still not feeling any of the uber tiredness lots of women struggle with in the third trimester, and I think regular exercise has really helped with that.

As for reasons to work out, I have a whole list, but one thing that I learned recently and found really interesting was this: there was a study done that showed that the placentas of moms who exercised regularly through early and mid-pregnancy grew faster and functioned better than the placentas of those who didn’t exercise. In fact, they functioned 15% better, meaning increased nutrient delivery to baby and improved toxin removal.

Yeah, power placentas!

Today is my day off/rest day and I’m totally embracing it;)
I had a cotton candy and vanilla combination the other day and it was really fantastic!
Aww, so glad you got a pedicure! I remember getting mine right before I had my baby and it felt amazing!

It was totally luxurious and awesome. The massaging chair might have actually been the best part. :)

Days off are the best!! You deserve it!! You don’t even wanna know how bad my fashion sense it. I don’t have any – that’s the problem!! haha

Yay! Those days off are the best sometimes! So glad you were able to spend some quality time with your cousin.

As for fashion sense, I’ve definitely come a long way in the last few years. ;) But, it typically takes me awhile to start to like a new fashion look, so I usually catch on to something just as it gets popular or as it’s on its way OUT.
