Cupcake Insomnia and Marvelous in My Monday

by Kim on December 3, 2012

Before I get into the weekend goings-on and MIMM, I have two quick, super important questions for you.

#1: Have you tried this wine?wine#2: If so, were you, by chance, up all night afterwards???

I had a maaajor bout of insomnia last night, and the only possible culprit I could think of was this vino. Hubby says he didn’t sleep well either. I tried to so some research, Googling things like “cupcake wine caffeine” and “cupcake wine insomnia,” but didn’t really get anywhere.

The wine was good, but reading in the living room at 2 am wasn’t so much. (Although I guess I have been struggling to find reading time lately…I’m reading this right now and finding it pretty interesting so far. Take what you can get, I guess!)

Don’t you hate that feeling when you’re soo tired but just can’t get your mind to shut down? I used to always just lay in bed for hours when this happened, trying to bully myself into fall asleep and worrying about how tired I’d be the next day (nice, calming approach, huh?). I’ve never had any luck with sheep counting or writing To Do lists to get nagging tasks out of my head. Now, if I’m not sleeping within about 45 min, I get up and do something quiet (usually, read).

Last night, I eventually had to sort of meditate myself to sleep. (That’s meditate, not medicate. Ha.) Basically, I forced myself to think about nothing. And it was really, really hard.

I visualized “white”-not white things, just white. And I focused on taking long, slow, sleep-like breaths. Of course, I caught my brain drifting off to think about stupid, random things about 100 times and had to reel it back in (suddenly, it’s like “why am I thinking about the blender scene in Father of the Bride, out of nowhere??”). But eventually, I started getting that fuzzy-around-the-edges, I’m-falling-asleep feeling. Typically, recognizing that I’m falling asleep is enough to jolt me awake, but this time I willed myself to stay focused on whiteness, breathing, and letting go…and it actually worked!

Mason woke up hungry at 6, but then was nice enough to go back to sleep until 9:30!! Hallelujah!

So, I’m actually feeling fine today. But I’m officially terrified of Cupcake wine (which might have had nothing to do with it). If anyone else has had a similar experience, I’d love to hear it!

Moving on…I’m going to join Katie in celebrating Marvelous in My Monday today.

MIMMThe idea is to kick off the week on a positive note by appreciating something marvelous. Here are a few happenings I found pretty marvelous over the weekend…

First things first: we finally have a Christmas tree!

Tree Collage On the right: my baby’s first Christmas ornament (1985 REPRESENT), some Badgers representation, and an ornament for our first Christmas as a married couple (2009)

And Mason got his first intro to lights…

Mase Lights

Yes, of course this photo was staged. Babies are props, remember?

PicMonkey has some awesome new Winterland themed effects, by the way. Might want to clear your schedule.

For example, this is the “chill” theme:

Here’s “frost”:

And “snowfall”! Ha!Mase Snow I just can’t help myself.

Anyway, after we got the tree squared away, Brent was nice enough to handle the outdoor lighting.

It was somehow almost 60 degrees out, so Mase and I went for a nice long walk, hitting up the park along the way.

GoingforaWalkWe’ve tried the swings before and he’s never been a huge fan, but this time, he randomly went crazy for it! Smiling and giggling the whole time. Seriously, who knows what kids are going to like from one day to the next. Maybe he’s finally confident enough with his balance to get into it? (Although I guess the picture above doesn’t really scream “balance”…)

Later, I pretended it wasn’t 60 degrees out so I could feel all cozy and wintery working on a writing project by the fire

Eventually, “working on a writing project” somehow morphed into “shopping for baby clothes”…

ebayBut then I got brutally outbid on 4 pairs of baby socks, losing them in the final seconds for $1.89, and was too depressed to continue.

Dinner Saturday night was ham baked in apple cider and sweet potato casserole-I’m on a Holiday Food kick, apparently.

dinnerBut I’m kind of on a holiday everything kick. The halls are decked. Christmas gifts are being purchased thought about. Rudolph is on TV this Thursday and the DVR is already cued up to record every precious second. (!!)

Meanwhile, this kid has no idea what’s going on…

TreeCollage Why are you guys so obsessed with me holding these shiny things?

But this time next year, he’s going to be LOSING his MIND. I remember exactly how it felt. There is hardly a time of greater anticipation in life.

Only 3 weeks to go! Can you believe that?

What’s a marvelous happening from your weekend?

Do you ever get random bouts of insomnia? What do you do?

Love your holiday & know what you mean about wanting to be nice & cozy & just in the holiday spirit. :) Gotta love Pic Monkey!! As for the wine, haven’t tried that one, but it seems to be awfully popular lately! Sorry about the insomnia… I usually just read like you did until my eyes are too tired to focus anymore. Have a great Monday!!

PicMonkey is the bomb! I love the seasonal effects. You should try the wine, it’s really unique! I’d heard a lot about it too and had to give it a shot.

He is SOOOOOO cute! Love the pic of him with the lights, so adorable!!

I have had that wine before, not sure if it kept me up though. I have insomnia always, lol!

Happy week to you! All your christmas decor looks beautiful!

Thanks Katie! I’m sure the insomnia was totally random, but it was so bizarre I couldn’t help being suspicious of the wine. :) Happy week to you, too!
