This post was born out of an idea I got from the lovely Sarah, a fellow Madison blogger who writes over at www.sarahlearns.com. In between posting pics of cute dogs, Sarah writes about healthy living while in grad school–you should check her out!

So for this post: basically, I jot down a couple things that are going on in my life and/or in my brain right now. (I know, you’re scared to find out. Don’t worry, I’ve censored out most of the extra absurd stuff.)

–Gearing up for my new blog design!

soon I’ve been working with a designer for quite awhile now, and we’re nearing the finish line. I’m looking forward to retiring the rough amateur header you see now, which I may have spent a total of 10 minutes creating in Paint. I’m also looking forward to doing some fun celebratory things on the blog (hint: think giveaways) in an attempt to help force you to get excited about the new look, too!

 

–Getting Mason started on solid foods (officially). I’ve dabbled it in a little over the past month or two, giving him random things here and there just for fun (mostly frozen bananas for teething-he goes crazy over them), but after he randomly had an allergic reaction to something I gave him, I backed away from it a little. (Technically, you don’t “have” to start babies on solid food until 6 months, so I already felt like I was overachieving a little bit-and who wants that??)

Then, when I started trying to amp up the solid food intake again (like a week ago), he decided to gag on and puke up the sweet potatoes he’d originally really liked. So then I became paranoid that he would not touch anything but bananas, EVER, and suddenly found new motivation to get the solid food train rolling-for reals this time.

–Trying to balance our family of 3’s 3 totally different dietary needs. As you know, I’m eating diary-free now, but I feel bad forcing Brent to do the same, so I’ve been doing a lot of cooking double-duty-making him something from our typical cheese-laden menu and then preparing some vegan grass + air mixture for myself on the side (just kidding…it’s not bad at all).

And then, of course, there’s the baby food prep for Mason. I’m so excited to try fun flavor combos with him, but also a little terrified that we’ll have an encore food reaction episode (not that it’s the end of the world, but no mom wants to see her baby in discomfort because of something she made him eat).

 

–Training and getting excited for the Great Lakes Half Marathon in October! I’ll write a full post on this soon, but training is going SO much better this time. M is napping for longer periods of time, which allows me to actually get runs in during the day (I’ve been meaning to try the daycare center at the gym, but I’m kind of nervous about it for whatever reason). And even more importantly, my body is much more ready than it was last time. There is still some birth-related discomfort (mainly, feeling like I have to stop and use the bathroom every 5 seconds) and I still feel like I’m learning how to run in a new body, but it’s much more manageable this time.

–Experimenting with my steamer. I bought a steamer a long time ago, but was lazy about dragging it out of the pantry and actually using it (especially since I already have an overwhelming number of gadgets crowding my kitchen counter). So far, I’ve made a few different veggies and some salmon (which made the house reek for a day and a half). It’s nice because it’s SO fast, saves me from having to heat up the oven, and can steam a whole meal at once. It’ll be especially great for softening foods for Mason when he’s eating finger foods.

I also want to try making things like dumplings and tamales in it-eventually. (Breath not held.)

–Getting excited for fall! I know I’ve already talked about this ad nauseum, so I won’t bore you with yet another list of Fall Things I’m Freaking Out About.

Ok, just one quick thing: pumpkin beer! I was pregnant at this time last year and couldn’t drink, so I have to make up for it this year (I think that’s how it works?).

The best pumpkin beer I’ve ever had is Tyranena Painted Ladies Pumpkin Spice Ale:

Brent and I are going to a beer tasting festival thing in a few weeks (a fun event I had to miss last year), and it’s gonna be a RAGER.*

*Not really at all, considering we have to come home and be parents afterwards. :)

–Looking forward to a friend’s bachelorette party tomorrow! We’re spending the afternoon at the “beach” (on Lake Michigan-best we Midwesterners can do) and then going on a booze cruise. I’m a little nervous about figuring out how/where I’m going to pump throughout the day, but I’ll make it work.

–Starting to more seriously daydream about writing a novel.

It’s something I’ve always hoped/planned to do at some point in my life, and I’ve been toying with story ideas since I was, oh, 12? Usually I have some “breakthrough idea” that I’ll think about for a week or two before deciding it’s total crap (<-I also like to pretend I’m from England sometimes).

But I’ve been thinking about the same plot line for about a year now, so I might actually be getting somewhere this time… (Please don’t ask me what it is-I’m superstitious and shy about discussing it. Trust me, if things ever get real, you’ll hear about!)

Now the only thing standing in my way is time to sit down and write…which is a pretty big “thing.”
