Dad’s day and letting go

by Kim on June 16, 2014

Hey friends!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Dad’s Day weekend!

I had a great time hanging with my boys…

Saturday was one of those frantic days of running errands/doing chores/etc.–everything that somehow eats up hours and hours of time. We were originally planning on getting dinner with friends, but Mason was a little under the weather, so I decided to stay home with him.

Basically, we’re pretty sure he’s developed seasonal/environmental allergies, which, when they flair up, trigger asthma-like symptoms. I didn’t want our babysitter to have to deal with all the inhaler treatments that come along with the asthma–and, plus, I wanted to keep an eye on him to make sure his wheezing didn’t get worse. (He was fine.)

Luckily, our friends were able to stop over to our place after dinner for a backyard bonfire.

We also got to dig into this bad boy:

I’d asked Brent if he had any special requests for a Father’s Day treat/meal he’d like me to make, and when he couldn’t think of anything, I suggested he to go Pinterest and select Food & Drink. (Aka The Danger Zone)

You can imagine what happened from there…

Within minutes, he’d found a handful of suuuuper decadent desserts, each naughtier and more insanely delicious-looking than the last. He finally settled on the chocolate PB no-bake cake–which was awesome, because it was a cinch to throw together.

In the end, we both agreed that it was actually TOO rich. (Although, duh, still amazing.)

Yesterday, we went out for a buffet brunch to celebrate the big day, and as a special gift to his dad, Mason refused to sit in a booster seat. Like super-meltdown-refused.

So our vision of a nice family brunch turned into taking turns eating while the other entertained Mr. “Hold me on your lap or I will scream.”

Problem (for me): there isn’t a whole lot of room left on this lap, especially when crammed into a restaurant booth.

But the food was still awesome!

The place we went to is famous for their sticky buns, which I told myself I was just going to “take a few bites” of. Yeah…

I think I left like a thumbnail-sized scrap on my plate, just to say I didn’t eat it ALL…

The hubby is in the middle of a (voluntary) job transition, and actually starts at his new company today. But somehow, despite that AND the fact that it was Father’s Day, I was the one who got surprise “just because” flowers.

Thanks, Brent. :)

I think I might have been complaining about stress too much. Which is ironic, considering how strongly I believe that stress does horrible things to the body…but that’s probably also why I was complaining about it. Despite our best efforts, we still live in a very high-stress society, and sometimes there’s just no escaping that crap.

After a good talk with the hubby, I actually made a pretty big decision over the weekend: I stepped away from a freelancing gig I’ve been doing on-and-off for the past 2 years. It was a big move, and a difficult one (especially since we were just launching into a new project), but I finally realized that the stress it was causing me wasn’t worth what I was getting for it. Now that I have a full-time job, I’m certainly not in it for the money, and the sporadic/unpredictable nature of the work was just too much–especially while pregnant!

The minute I hit send on the email to my employer, it felt like 1,000 pounds were lifted off my shoulders. Suddenly I was 10x more confident that it was the right thing to do, and actually wish I’d done it much sooner.

Here’s to letting go!

With my To Do list suddenly a lot lighter, I was free to focus on the things that really matter:

(Looking for airplanes)

That’s an apple tree, by the way (if you were wondering about the sloppy pink ornaments).

Either he’s an artistic genius or I’m an alarmingly bad one–I’ll let you decide.

I’m pretty sure I take this same exact picture every year…

They’re just too pretty not to. But does anyone know how to keep them from flopping down so much?? I know that’s kind of their style, but our neighbors’ are so much perkier…

Anyone else cut something out of your life recently for sanity’s sake?

Did you celebrate Father’s Day?

Favorite kind of flower??

Tulips are my #1, but those peonies are definitely my favorite thing in our yard.

Have a wonderful week!

I have seven peonies in my yard. Once they get so large that they start falling over, you’ll want to get supports for them. Menards sells great peony supports for like $2. They are three stakes with a wire circle connecting them. You put the stakes around the base of the bush, like a triangle. and the circle provides something for the branches and blossoms to rest on. It’s best to put the stakes up before the bushes get too big, otherwise it’s quite the hassle (speaking from experience). Some of my smaller peony bushes are propped up with little garden fences. I just do a square around the base of the bush and the leaves and blossoms rest on top.

Glad you’re feeling better since letting the side job go! :)
Peonies are so beautiful! There’s a flower I love, but I really don’t know the name of it. It has a tall stem and a round ball-ish flower at the top. I want to plant them in my yard because I’m pretty sure they’re perennials!

PEONIES FOR LIFE! Like, I love peonies so much, yet the husband hasn’t caught onto the horribly bad hints I leave him about them. When will guys learn…

Glad you feel better after deciding on dropping the freelance gig. Stress ain’t a pretty thing!! Nia was so clingy this weekend, so I feel for your screaming match in the restaurant. Tyler and I keep saying, “it’s teeth!” – that might still be the case when she’s 15 years old. Who knows…

Oh man, awesome choice on the chocolate peanut butter cake, Brent!!! That sounds right up my alley. And I love that it’s no-bake! AKA perfect for summer. Definitely checking that one out. And what a man! How nice of him to get you flowers – they’re so pretty. Those are always a welcomed surprise. :) Great job on letting go. It sounds like it was definitely the right decision. I’ve actually been thinking a lot lately of some things I need to let go, especially as I’m taking on some group fitness classes as the summer goes on. It’s just weighing what “those things” are – still trying to figure that one out. ;)

Gotta love stress! Or hate it :-) I’ve actually been contemplating stepping away from a freelancing gig as well. Just no time lately to do much blogging on my own let alone for several others. We’ll see though. I have such a hard time cutting the cord! Gorgeous flowers and what a lovely surprise! I just planted some flowers in pots for our front patio and it’s amazing how much they brighten it up. Now to do the backyard…

Stress…ugh! It totally wreaks havoc on your body and is especially no good when you’re pregnant. That’s what I keep telling myself, but sometimes it’s so hard to get rid of. My full time job can definitely be a stressful one and on days like that, I know I just need to take a break to regroup and distress. I certainly don’t want to pass those feelings along to the babies!

Glad I found your blog on another site! It’s always nice to follow fellow WI bloggers. Where in WI do you live? I’m in the Appleton area. I can never go on Pinterest when hungry. It makes me 1000x hungrier. That dessert looks awesome though!

I didn’t realize you had a side gig! No wonder you are feeling stressed! I think that its smart to let that stuff go. For me, when I feel bad I tend to take the easy way out of things, which is usually the more expensive. So when I’m less stressed I take the time to save my money and make the smarter choice.

Good point about easy = expensive! So often true.
