Drinking the Kool Aid

by Kim on July 24, 2012

Several months ago, I signed up to participate in the Daily Challenge. This is a website that sends you daily emails, each with a new challenge related to health or wellness that you have to try to complete that day. The challenges vary a lot-some are things you actually do, and some are just things to think about. Examples of challenges I’ve gotten include:

  • Put a new photo in an old picture frame.
  • Think about yesterday’s events, and pick out 3 things that happened that make you feel grateful.
  • Read a different newspaper or visit a news website that’s new to you.
  • Do a hip roll: Lie on your back, bend your knees, and drop your legs to 1 side, then the other.
  • Eat 1 food with folate or folic acid, like dark, leafy veggies; citrus fruit; or fortified cereal.

If you do the day’s challenge, you can hop over to the site and mark it as done to gain points. It’s kinda fun.

I’m a big fan of adding positive little habits to my daily routine (such as my happiness journal), but the problem is that I tend to go overboard and try to add too many, so it gets overwhelming. This way, I can do one of these little 5-minute tasks once, and then never again.

Anyway, yesterday’s challenge was one of my favorites so far. It was:

3 traits

I came up with:

  • Kind. I think this is the most admirable trait a person can have.
  • Vivacious. I’m drawn to people who seem to always be having fun.
  • Eloquent. I’m a horrible public speaker. Even in small talk, I feel like I can’t find the right words sometimes, and it’s crazy frustrating. So I really admire people who are able to express themselves well verbally.

What would your 3 traits be?

In other news, I made an exciting purchase yesterday. These bad boys are on their way to my doorstep:

mizunosSomething about black laces is deeply badass.

After reading about Mizunos on tons of running blogs, I took a nice long swig of the Kool Aid and joined the cult following. People who are into Mizunos talk about what a “smooth ride” they are (??) and how the “wave” design just literally propels you forward (so, like…cheating?).

I had to know what it was all about.

At first, I wanted to get these super loud, extra badass looking ones…

…but after completing Mizuno’s Precision Fit test, I was pointed to the Wave Inspire 8’s (first pic above) to help deal with my high arches and pronation tendenciees.

For my next pair, though, I’m holding out for the wild colors.

I’m hoping/praying that a pair of new shoes will help jump start my training a little. At this point, I’m starting to get nervous that I won’t be ready to run a half marathon in a month, and I might have to settle for the 5K instead. It’s not the end of the world…I had no idea what I’d be ready to do at 4 months postpartum, so my training goals were all written in pencil anyway. And I definitely had no idea how difficult it was going to be to find time to get my runs in. So we’ll see what happens…there are always other races!

In closing, here are some random things I found on Pinterest (I just couldn’t resist):

Have a great week!
