Helloooooo weekend! (almost)

Since I’m coming down from two back-to-back 4-day weeks, I feel like I barely even deserve the break, but this weekend’s shaping up to be a particularly awesome one.

For one thing, we’re expecting perfect spring weather, and the FARMER’S MARKET IS OPEN!

Our Saturday farmer’s market is INSANE–massive and colorful and exciting and very, very, very well-attended. Whether I end up going usually comes down to whether I’m up for shuffling along the sidewalk in a giant herd, craning for a glimpse of some carrots. And I hardly ever have a prayer of getting close to the cheese samples.

But it’s fun. And I get to carry coffee around and take pictures of food stands. And–most importantly–I get to be outside, which is a thrilling thing for all pasty post-winter Midwesterners.

Anyway, since it’s Friday and I know you don’t want to trudge through some long, tedious post (um, too late?), here are 5 random things going on in my life right now:

1. Saturday night is my belated birthday dinner. We’re going here, and I’ll probably end up with my usual fancy restaurant choice–the salmon. (Hubby will probably get the steak and be forced to share some with me. Perks of marriage.)

The best reservation time we could get is 8:30–sooo, the middle of the night. I’m 29 now, I don’t have the stamina for that.

As for a post-dinner treat: WILL there be froyo??? (Should there be?? Birthday or no birthday, there has to be a line, right…)

2. Next weekend, I’m getting certified in Piyo Strength!


I wanted to get at least one group class certification under my belt (so I can possibly start teaching one day?!?) and Piyo seemed like a perfect fit for me.

If you’re not familiar, Piyo incorporates strength training (lunges, push-ups, burpees–all our favorites!) with yoga and pilates (think sun salutations and warriors), all set to Top 40 music. In my mind, that’s a recipe for awesome.

I’ve been chatting with the cert instructor, and she says it shouldn’t be a problem for me to do the certification preggo. (I’ll just have to modify a few things along the way.) So hopefully that’s true…

The actual class is happening in Green Bay (a few hours away from here) and it’s only on Sunday from 9-3, so we decided to make a family weekend trip out of the whole thing. We’ll be staying at a hotel with a little kiddo waterpark and venturing out on the town to places like this sweet-looking bayside amusement park.

As usual, I’m just praying for cooperation from the 3-foot-tall person who runs our family!

3. I’m stiiiiiill recovering from some poor eating habits I picked up over Easter. Since we had so many leftovers, I haven’t had to cook or get groceries all week long, and it’s kind of perpetuating the problem.

Ready to get back on track ASAP. I’m lookin’ at you, farmer’s market. And you, slow cooker.

4. Confession: I’m not excited at all to spend the summer pregnant. (It was never the plan…thank you very much, two miscarriages.)

Maybe that’s normal, but there’s also the very real possibility that I’m just outrageously selfish.

In my experience, summer is for drinking adult beverages with friends, wearing skimpy things, and doing active things outside, regardless of temp. Pregnancy doesn’t really jive with any of that.

BUT I will say that summer maternity clothes are pretty cute. So that’s a tiny little perk.

With my last pregnancy, I was huge in the dead of winter, and nothing upon NOTHING was flattering. In the summer, you get maxi skirts/dresses and sandals that don’t care how swollen your feet are.

I’ve been particularly happy about two online maternity hot spots: Pink Blush and ASOS. I just ordered this cute dress from ASOS yesterday:


(Granted, the model is 5′ 11″ and doesn’t look pregnant AT ALL, so I won’t be expecting miracles…)

I’ve also been loving new-to-me Pink Blush. The skinny jeans I got there are EASILY the best pair of maternity pants I’ve ever owned, and for a really reasonable price. Fellow preggos: I highly recommend checking them out! (Although the jeans I got aren’t in stock right now. Basically, if you see something you like, BUY IT IMMEDIATELY or it will be gone.)

5. I’m obsessed with Kombucha. I know I probably sound super brainwashed from all the paleo podcasts I’ve been listening to, but the truth is–well, I kind of am. I’ve never really encountered a “healthy living lifestyle” that’s just made so much darn sense. It’s the real thing, people.

The first time I tried Kombucha, I chugged it down like I would any other tasty bottled beverage, and my stomach WAGED WAR.

gingerberryAs you might know, Kombucha’s biggest claim to fame is its high probiotic content. I didn’t know that meant proceed with EXTREME caution. I was bloated and completely miserable all day, and couldn’t stop thinking, “this is supposed to be good for me??”

Supposed to, yes…Kombucha also contains high levels of antioxidants, b-vitamins, and glucaric acid. Its laundry list of health benefits (from the Wellness Mama) include:

  • liver detoxification
  • improved pancreas function
  • increased energy
  • better digestion
  • improved mood (helps with anxiety/depression)
  • kills Candida (yeast)
  • helps nutrient assimilation

Now that I’ve been drinking it for awhile, my stomach has adjusted, but I still don’t drink more than half a bottle at a time. (For one thing: the stuff’s expensive!! And I knooow I should make my own…)

I also never drink anything but the Gingerberry flavor–discovering that, after trying most of the others, was like sunshine breaking through the clouds. Ohhhh, so THIS is why people love this stuff!

I’m not sure how accurate this is, but I now sort of judge my gut health based on how well my stomach is able to handle Kombucha. Like, this past Tuesday, after my long weekend of poor eating, my stomach flared up big time after a half bottle of the stuff. Surprising? No.

The next day, it was fine. And the next day, I felt like I was on top of the world.

Kombucha does have a teeny, tiny bit of alcohol in it (not enough that I’m even remotely worried about mixing it with pregnancy), but I’ve heard that that has nothing to do with the buzz you sometimes get from it. Talk about energy and improved mood. I’m hooked.

I’m 24 and I think that dinner at 8:30pm is late! I’d be starving by then and tired! I’m never tried kombucha…. maybe I’ll have to try it someday :) sounds interesting.

I was just going to comment on how that model doesn’t even look pregnant. Like, seriously?!?!?

I LOVE Rise kombucha (it’s a Canadian brand) and when I was talking to one of the owners of it last September, he said to not drinking a lot of kombucha while breastfeeding (and maybe he said pregnant, as well??) because it is so detoxifying, it might overdo it (and affect your milk–I think?). Ok, see I’m terrible at this! Anyways, good thing it is so expensive because I drink it as a “luxury” so I guess the point of the story is a) don’t even listen to what I babble on about, and b) I doubt kombucha could detoxify me enough to make any difference because my wallet doesn’t allow it to lol.

I’ve heard that too about breastfeeding–that you detoxify right into the breast milk, and that the baby can get some of the same effects as mom (increased energy, sped-up digestion), which could be problematic. I haven’t heard anything about pregnancy though, other than that if you haven’t tried kombucha you shouldn’t start while you’re pregnant in case you have a bad reaction. Let me know if you hear anything else though! Definitely want to be safe!

But over-detoxification, really?? That’s possible?? I agree, that sounds like a lot of kombucha!

LOVE kombucha! My go-to flavors are the Trilogy and Gingerberry. I’ve also been reading up on Paleo/Primal and listening to podcasts (Balanced Bites), and I find it all so interesting. All of the info that’s coming out on gut health fascinates me!

jEALOUS!!! I’m thinking of getting another certification, and I’d love for it to be prenatal based, even though I’m a long ways off from having kiddos myself. Also, I love the Triology Kombucha. The chia seed ones are good, but hard to adjust to at first.
