How Do You Know Whether You’re Happy?

by Kim on October 3, 2012

Or maybe, how happy is happy enough?

People are hard to satisfy. We always want more. More money, more time, more sleep, whatever. THEN we’ll be happy.

In The Happiness Project, Gretchen Rubin writes about Saint Therese Martin, who famously wrote, “I take care to appear happy and especially to be so.” Therese was known for being an ultra-happy chick, but no one gave her any credit for maintaining her happy disposition all the time because they figured it came naturally to her. It never occurred to them that maybe she actually worked really hard at it.

Today, Mase and I went for a walk. It was crazy pretty out. Case in point:

Crazy pretty. Fall is just bomb.

Anyway, at one point, I saw an older man pushing an older lady in a wheelchair down the sidewalk. That sight alone was enough to rouse the sap in me. But then, they stopped in the shade under a big yellow-leafed tree and just stared up at the tree for awhile together. They both gave me huge smiles as we walked past, and then went back to staring up at the tree.

I don’t know if there’s a specific formula you can use to identify and quantify happiness. And I can’t say for sure whether everyone who looks happy actually is.

But sometimes, you know it when you see it.
