It’s official: I’m a Midwesterner

by Kim on November 13, 2012

If you live in the northern midwest, I think you’re pretty much required to own some kind of rustic bear/log cabin/pine tree-themed item. Most ideally, a quilt, an overstuffed pillow, a wall hanging, or a wooden statue of a forest animal you can put by your fireplace.

Some kind of taxidermy project in the basement doesn’t hurt, either.

Well. Feast your eyes on this:

quilt Boom.

Look how soft!

quilt2 And northwoods-y!

bear And, the best part…

It was $3.99!!

Mason and I took a little trip to Goodwill today. A brand new one just opened less than a mile from our house, so I knew I was going to have to check it out at some point. You never know what weird treasures you’ll encounter at a GW.

For example, these teacups seemed cute, until I looked a little closer…is that an angry green moose with wings for ears and a pipe through his nose??

If you can’t tell, don’t blame the picture-I had my eyeball right up to it and still had no idea. But it’s disturbing.

There were also a lot of holiday decorations, but some of them were a little questionable…

hoho Maybe it’s just me.

The only thing I was actually looking for was a pair of cotton baby PJs. Mase already has one pair of cotton PJs and a bunch of fuzzy fleece ones, but when he slept from 7:30 PM-9 AM straight (!?!?!) last night while wearing the cotton pair, I decided it wouldn’t hurt to up our inventory IMMEDIATELY.

I would have happily picked these up if they hadn’t been inexplicably covered in skulls with eye patches playing guitars (??):

Luckily, there was also a space-themed pair that made it home with us:

Quilt and PJs are in the wash as we speak.

To be perfectly honest, I don’t really know what I’m going to do with the quilt. It just seemed like a good investment-an extra blanket for guests, or just something to lay a baby on in front of a roaring fire (in lieu of a proper bearskin).

And now, as a bonus, I’m an official, bonafide midwesterner.

Have you found any thrift store gems lately?

If you’re a midwesterner, do you own something rustic?

If you live elsewhere, what are your stereotypical local must-haves?

Like, do people on the coast have to own something beachy?

Do Texans have to have cowboy boots?

I can’t think of anything rustic that we have, which is weird because you’re so right about the upper Midwest thing. I think if we had more of a home vine than apartment we would definitely have something! The pjs with skulls are very interesting…

Haha “interesting” is definitely the word for those :)
