Random things about me: fitness edition

Ok. So I didn’t mean to spend the whole evening watching TV last night. But–thanks a lot, universe–Something Borrowed was on TV, and there was nothing I could do.

The worst part is that I could barely even enjoy myself, because I was so busy feeling guilty about everything I should have been doing.

But I was seriously paralyzed. Does this happen to anyone else??

The best I could do was to throw in a load of laundry during commercial breaks and do a made-up-as-I-went arm workout in the living room with some hand weights. (You’d be surprised how many posture curls you can do when you’re barely paying attention.)

Really, the only true win of the whole night was our dinner. I made this Cashew Chicken with Asparagus and Shiitake Mushrooms from A Calculated Whisk, and it was both surprisingly easy to whip up and surprisingly delicious.

Paired with Trader Joe’s frozen veggie rice, one of my favorite go-to’s.

Highly recommended! I’m kicking myself for not bringing the leftovers for lunch today.

So how about a little survey today? Giselle posted this one awhile ago, and I thought it would be a fun thing to tuck away from some random Friday.

And this is that Friday!

1. What’s your favorite type of exercise?

Chalene Johnson introduced me to the concept of the soulmate workout. There are so many options out there, especially these days, that we should all be able to find a kind of workout that we actually look forward to. If you hate running, guess what–you don’t have to run!

I’m torn between barre workouts and fit yoga (basically, yoga + strength).

2. What’s your biggest personal exercise pet peeve?

Having to stop to pee! (Even worse: having to go while on a run, far away from home and nowhere near a bathroom.)

Also, my right knee clicks a lot, especially during squats. It’s been doing it forever, and it drives me nuuuts.

3. What’s your biggest gym pet peeve?

Well, I haven’t been to the gym in a really long time (I’m currently membership-less, although I’ve been hitting up the yoga studio regularly) but when I used to go often, I was a very head-down, get-‘er-done kind of exerciser. So I honestly don’t remember paying much attention to anyone else.

The one thing I can think of is that it used to make me soooo sad when, in a long row of machines, someone picked the machine right next to mine. Moreso when there were other machines open, obviously–but really, I got kinda pouty anytime this happened.

I don’t know if I can call that a pet peeve so much as a symptom of being an anti-social, claustrophobic weirdo. (Says the girl who now uses an isolated treadmill in a dark basement. Haha.)

4. How many days a week do you work out?

This varies a lot, and I don’t stress about it much. My general rule is to not let 2 days go by without working out. Right now, I’m doing something about 4-5 days a week. (“Something” = not necessarily a super long sweatfest. I count those 10-minuters!)

5. What’s one exercise you love to hate?

I secretly hate lunges, yet I put them in my workouts all the time. Thinking it’s maybe related to the knee thing?


6. What is one form of exercise you wish you loved but don’t?

Swimming! I love the idea of swimming, and I love to be in and around water. The problem is that I’m not a strong enough swimmer to actually do it for exercise. I’m the girl who tries to breathe both in AND out when my head comes out of the water during the freestyle stroke, so I end up gasping and choking and feeling like I’m suffocating.

The funniest part is that I was actually a lifeguard at a waterpark for two summers. Don’t worry, everyone I guarded is safe. Somehow.

7. Do you prefer to workout alone, with a friend or in a group?

I love working out alone and in groups–alone for the convenience, and in groups for the positive peer pressure.

I’m not that big into working out with a friend, only because I don’t think I work out as hard. It feels like it becomes more of a social thing then.

That said, I did once go on a really nice 11-mile run around the lake with a friend. Neither of us cared much about our pace, and the time just flew.

8. Do you match your workout clothing to your shoes?

Um…what?? Who has that kind of money?

Actually, everything I buy for workout purposes ends up being either pink or black, so it all sort of ends up matching by default. Does that count?

9. What’s your biggest fitness triumph?

Running a marathon. (In 90 degree weather.)


10. What’s one of your fitness goals this year?

Here are 3: have a healthy pregnancy and an uncomplicated birth, and ditch that baby weight!

So glad you did this survey too! Love reading about other peoples fitness. I definitely agree with you on gym pet peeve. I acutally almost added that into my survey as it’s one that drives me crazy! At my old gym the same old guy would get on the machine next to me almost every time and he smelled so bad! There was 20 other treadmills!!! Come on people, give a girl some space!

My Achilles heel clicks when I do lunges! It is really annoying and no matter how I place my back foot, it always does! So you are not alone with the weird “clicks”, haha!

I have recently realized that there will always be another thing to get done on my to-do list and to just do what I want instead sometimes, that list will still be there when I get back. ;)

Love this survey! Generally, I workout about 5 days a week. My preferred form of exercise is Zumba, but I’ve been trying to incorporate more strength training into my routine. And I also LOVE yoga fit! I’ve tried both your workouts and they’re awesome!

I love when Chalean says, “You’ve found your soulmate workout.” I think it is important to find!
My fitness goal for the year will hopefully take place next Saturday – I’m running a 50 mile race.

I don’t think I ever knew you ran a full marathon! Wowzers!

I wish I loved yoga more. I have really TRIED to enjoy it because I recognize it has a lot of benefits, but it’s often really boring for me.

#1. Right now my favorite type of exercise is pilates…especially of the POP Pilates variety. I’ve been thinking about going to try Piyo after hearing you talk about it. It sounds like a perfect workout! #9. My biggest fitness triumph is running a half marathon. :-)
