Ready or not

Tomorrow’s the big day! I’m running my first ever 10K and my first ever night race. (It starts at 8 PM.)

My goal time is 50 minutes, but honestly, I have no idea what to expect with this distance. My training didn’t end up being quite as aggressive as I’d hoped, but I have a feeling the evening start time is going to be a pro for me. So, really, anything could happen!

And of course, since it’s my first 10K, at least I know I’m guaranteed to PR. (Har. Har.)

Twilight 10K

I *just* noticed the second sentence above about being the best lighted runner. Ermm…what does that mean, exactly? Do I need to go buy some reflective tape before tomorrow? Are we talking about glow necklaces??

Or miner headlamps??

night race

This seems dangerous.

I also just checked out the course map: besides one GINORMOUS HILL at mile 1.5 (which almost all local races seem to be unable to avoid for some reason), most of the course looks relatively flat. For the last stretch up to the finish line, we’ll be running up State Street—our drinking-establishment-studded “main” street downtown—and since it’ll be around 9 PM on a Saturday, there’s bound to be lots of activity in the area. That should be interesting.

So now I just have to decide what to do about that hill. Do I barrel up it (I’ve been training on hills so it shouldn’t be a problem) or take it easy, since it’s so early in the race? What do you suggest??

I’m also pumped about this weekend for a few other reasons:

–Brent’s sister, husband, and 1-year-old son are visiting! We love spending time with those guys and letting the cousins (who are only 2 weeks apart in age) hang out. It’s too bad it happens so infrequently, since we live 4 hours apart.

The last time they visited, the boys looked liked this!

Also, more selfishly: I’m thrilled that this means I’ll actually have someone to meet at the finish line tomorrow! We weren’t having any luck finding a babysitter, and Mason will be in bed before the race even starts.

–I’m working the Madison Mini Marathon booth at the race expo for half the day tomorrow. (The 10K is part of a series of races, the others being a half marathon and 5K happening on Sunday.) I’m secretly hoping the Endurance House guys will be there doing free foot strike analyses, so maybe I can sneak one in before I head home after my booth shift.

usboothWorking an expo in Milwaukee earlier this year.

–We’re going to a Memorial Day grill out on Sunday with some friends. I haven’t even started thinking about what I’m going to make yet…hopefully Pinterest will be able to point me in the right direction.

–I have yet to cash in my Mother’s Day gift from Brent, which is a morning of free time to do whatever I want. (I was planning to hit up a coffee shop or hang out at Barnes and Noble, doing some just-for-fun writing.) Thanks to the long weekend, maybe I’ll be able to squeeze this in on Monday!

Something to read:

Janae’s post about how working out makes her a better mom.

Something to do:

Pilates Alphabet! (As seen on Pinterest, where it was pulled from FitSugar.)

Pilates Alphabet

Lie on the ground, raise your legs, and write the alphabet in the air with your feet.

Something to eat:

Strawberries dried in the oven! (Also from Pinterest, obviously.)

Dried strawberries

3 hours at 210 degrees. Tastes like candy!

What’s something you’re excited about this weekend?

What’s your go-to grill out/summer get-together recipe?

Any idea how I could go about being the “best lighted runner” tomorrow??

Good luck tonight, Kim!!! You are going to do amazing and how FUN that it is at night and you will get to speed by all the downtown action of State Street at the end in those neon Asics!! Can’t wait to hear how it goes:) Enjoy the rest of your long weekend!

Have a wonderful weekend, Kim! :) The twilight race sounds like an awesome event. You’ll never believe it – I’m actually doing the 5K in New Glarus tomorrow morning (that I’ll be running the whole time will be.. well, highly unlikely). I may also be chanting “brewery tour… brewery tour…” in my head through most of it ;)

That’s so awesome!! Good luck! You’ll have to tell me how it goes. :)

Oh I love night races! If the hill is early on and the course flattens out after that, I’d give it medium-high intensity and plow up that thing. It shouldn’t take too long to recover after a hill if the course flattens out For our local night races when they tell us to light up, I’ve decked myself out in glow sticks and glow bracelets. It’s fun to see how creative people get!

Thanks for the advice! Ok, I definitely need to pick up some glow gear tomorrow then.

Good luck! 10k’s are a really good race distance – you don’t get way too worn out but it takes some time so it feels worth the money, haha.

That’s exactly what I was hoping it’d be like! :)

Have fun at your night race – maybe you could get some battery operated twinkle lights and put around you!!!
I love your Mother’s Day gift – I remember how exciting “free” time was when my boys were little (the kind without any guilt!!).
Have a great weekend!

Seriously, I don’t know what’s expected of me for lighting! I feel like I’d have a good shot at the competition with twinkle lights though. :)

You just nailed it–it’s not that I never get free time, it’s the GUILT-FREE kind that’s really sweet.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend too Kim!

This sounds like such a great race! I’ve never heard of a 10K at night! I bet it’s going to be a blast and you’re going to do great. Automatic PRs are the best :)
