So far

by Kim on October 24, 2013

Well, I’m two days into the new gig, and…so far so good!

Here’s where the magic happens:

20131023_161649

Is that an inspiring office or WHAT?

The walls are actually a nice soft yellow color (and I was lucky enough to inherit that sweet Red Elvises poster), but the fluorescent lighting is horrifying. By the end of the first day, I felt like my eyes were going to pop out of my head. I noticed that almost everyone else has lamps scattered all over their offices, so apparently the overhead lighting is not to be trifled with.

Step 1: get lamps. And possibly a devil-free poster.

The transition has actually been much easier than I expected (probably because I was anticipating horrible, horrible suffering—I’m really cheery like that). Everyone at the agency is super friendly and helpful, the job seems like it’s going to be a great fit, and Mason’s been in great hands at home with Grandma.

But that’s the thing…the hardest part of the transition, in my mind, hasn’t happened yet. Mason starts daycare on Monday. The fact that I didn’t have the slightest hint of anxiety about my first day, and slept like a baby the night before, confirmed my suspicion that that’s the part I’ve been most worried about all along, not the job itself. So we still have one big hurdle to go.

As smoothly as things are going, I’m still coming home totally exhausted at night. I think that’s pretty typical, but I really hope it doesn’t last forever—otherwise, I have no idea how I’m going to get anything done at home, ever.

Like…I have to do this, AND cook? And prep lunches? And spend quality time with my husband and son? And—hell—blog?

Working moms: how is this possible again?? Please tell me that I’ll eventually be able to keep my eyes open past 8 PM again…

Honestly, I can barely think as I’m writing this, so I’ll keep it quick.

Here’s a little rundown of what my life is like right now…

–The commute has been long (40 minutes each way, in good traffic), but also awesome, thanks to the 30+ podcast episodes I put on my iPod. Right now, I can’t get enough of Ben Greenfield Fitness—so, so good. The time flies, and by the time I get to the office, my head’s spinning with things I want to research and talk about on the blog (until I remember that—crap—I’m too tired to blog).

Actually, here’s a tidbit for you from a recent Ben episode: apparently, being tired is good for creativity. I swear he said that. I’d argue differently, but hey, science is science.

–I’m slooooowly getting used to my new Mac. One of the biggest challenges? Remembering that I have to close windows by clicking on the LEFT side instead of the RIGHT. It’s fine, but my problem is: why? Why couldn’t they keep such a basic thing consistent??

Oh, and I spent a SOLID 20 minutes trying to figure out how to put a hyperlink in a Word document, not seeing the extra bar that creeps down from the top of the screen. Dang Macs.

–My new company is hosting a college football tailgating party in a few weeks. JACKpot! Couldn’t have timed my start date better myself.

–Brent’s mom has been an absolute lifesaver. Not only is she taking care of Mason, but we’ve come home to amazing home-cooked meals every night. Pork tenderloin in the crockpot (which, I have a feeling, is about to become my new best friend) last night and chili with cornbread tonight. We could NOT be more grateful.

Hope you’re having a great week! I feel so disconnected…can’t wait to catch up on everyone’s blogs this weekend!

I definitely don’t know how working moms do it. I go to school and can barely keep it together. I guess because once I’m done classes, it doesn’t end. School work out the WAHZOO!! Glad work is going good so far!!! I definitely need to get caught up on blogs. I want to stalk you more :( hahah

Yeah, I have no idea how you’re doing it! I’m still trying to get through my personal training studying on the side, and it’s just straight up not happening. Need more TIME!

It really helps to hear you say that about Monday! I’ve been clinging to any little positive comment anyone makes about it. So thank you! :)

And yes, looking forward to getting reacquainted with my crock pot. Perfect time of year to do it!

For me (working mom), I have yet to stay up past like 9 pm – last night? Asleep by 8:30. My kiddo is 16 months, no where near sleeping through the night. My social life has been draining a lot but I need my sleep, so it has become my priority. As what everyone says “this too shall pass” and at some point I maybe will stay up to 10 whoot whoot! but that is alright, my job just makes me sooo much tired in addition to the wee one.

Oh my gosh! 8:30! I wish I was that disciplined…it’s 10 PM as I’m writing this and I’m nowhere near getting to bed. Totally going to pay tomorrow.

But seriously, it’s awesome that you make sleep such a high priority, because it IS! I want to be more like you!

I think its time for you to start pinning crockpot recipes my friend. And buy some crockpot liners so you have one less thing to clean! Keep your chin up, you will adjust.

What a lovely office :) I’m sure it will look much better once you decorate it.
Some Mac shortcuts: learn about the command key. Command q closes a window, command c copies, command v(I believe) pastes. Pushing two fingers (spread apart) on the mouse is a right click and brings up a menu. Then there’s things to learn about swiping on the mouse. I don’t really know them very well.
Hope those help a little :)

Good luck on Monday!!!! He will do great at daycare!!

I’m glad that things are going well so far! Transitions are always hard, and I imagine they’re even harder when kids are involved!

So, so hard! Even though I tried really hard to prepare myself for it, I still find myself thinking “is this really the right thing for us??” I know that’s perfectly normal and will probably pass.

Starting a new job is so hard and I can’t even imagine doing it with having child. You must be a super busy person at the end of the day! I hope daycare works out. Oh, and I love your office. Super cute!

Actually, in a way, having a child makes it easier because I’ve been focusing so much on him, I’ve barely had time to worry about the job part. :) But yeah, the combo is definitely intense!

Run around like madwoman all day. That’s my only answer for how to get things “done”. Although, at my house, nothing really gets that way. Most things end up just “good enough” and we move on. I pack M’s daycare bag, his lunch, and my lunch the night before. Other than that, I basically just chug coffee and cross my fingers that I remembered to brush my teeth and zip my pants up. Because I’ve forgotten both of those things on multiple occasions.

Hahaha you always make my day. I’ve forgotten deodorant multiple times and that always majorly sucks too.

What are your thoughts on “hire a cleaning lady”? Really starting to sound appealing as hell.

Reply

Kim October 27, 2013 at 10:04 pm

Um…in a good way. I guess hell isn’t that appealing. Easy misinterpreted.

Reply

Presley @ Run Pretty October 28, 2013 at 8:27 pm

hahaha I understood your point.

Cleaning lady? That’s one of my biggest wishes in life. Right up there with frenching Channing Tatum. ;) My husband would understand either of those things happening. I obviously married well. But for real, Ryne says we can hire someone but I don’t understand his math on that. My numbers tell me we’d be eating Ramen for dinner to afford it. Maybe as my Christmas gift he’ll get me a few months??? I say, if you can afford someone (even just once or twice a month) DO IT. I don’t know from experience or anything, but I’d love for someone to get the “deep” cleans over with for me.

(PS: I keep deodorant in my drawer at work, so, yeah.)

Being a working mom is the most exhausting thing ever. Between working, packing lunches for both myself and my daughter, doing chores, spending time with her and trying to chase her around the house, studying for the CPT and TRYING to blog. Phew. No I idea how to make it work. I can make it to 9:00 p.m. some nights but that is it.

I don’t think the exhaustion ever goes away but eventually you will fall into a routine that works and you get everything done.

Yeah, the CPT/blogging part is making the whole thing tricky for me too. I’m so sad to hear that the exhaustion doesn’t go away! You were supposed to lie! ;) haha

Reply

Lindsay @ Health Foragers November 26, 2013 at 6:58 pm

Haha, no kidding. I definitely should have sounded more positive! It is definitely exhausting but in my mind everybody having their own time (baby included) is important. I read a ton of research about it during my undergrad psychology major and parents who both work tend to have better relationships with their children because they really do cherish the time they have with together.

Sorry for the delay. How is it all going?

So happy your first couple of days have gone well. Next week will be hard, but I think once you get into a rhythm at home and also start hearing about how daycare is going you will be fine. Will you be doing daycare drop off or pick up?

Luckily, my husband’s agreed to handle drop-off! I just get to be the savior who swoops in at the end of the day for pick-up. :)
