Today’s THE DAY

by Kim on February 1, 2013

It’s my blogiversary!

That’s right. The blog turns 1 year old today.

1 year Celebrating 1 year of awkward self-portraits!

I still remember when it came into this world, red-faced and screaming, on the day I wrote my first post ever. (Notice the default “hello world” in the URL—ha!)

logotrimmed My first blog header, before Jenny saved me—man, I do NOT miss this thing!

It doesn’t feel like it’s been a whole year…this still feels like a baby blog to me. Maybe that’s partially because I didn’t tell anyone about my blog for the first several months. So even though it’s been ON THE INTERNET this whole time (as much as a drop of water is IN THE OCEAN), it’s really been “public,” in my mind, for much less than a year.

Brent knew about it from the beginning, of course, and he was always asking when I was going to make my big reveal. But I wanted to make sure this blogging thing was actually going to stick before I put it (and myself) out there for all of my friends and family to see.

Also, when I started blogging, I was pregnant, and I wanted to make sure I was actually going to have time to keep it up once I was a momma.

Well, one year down and still going strong!

sweatpink1One of the highlights of the year in blogging: becoming a Sweat Pink ambassador!

I gotta be honest: when I look back on those first posts (or first, say, 50+ posts, ha!), I cringe a little. Not that I think they’re horrible…my writing is just so much different now. It took me a loooong time to find my blogging voice, and I’m still working on it today (probably will be forever!).

I read somewhere that if your most recent post is just as good as your first, you’re doing something wrong. So I guess I must be on the right track?

Anyway. Before I get to the giveaway (!!!!), I wanted to ramble just a little bit more about my blogging experience so far. Bear with me…

Thoughts on a Year of Blogging

–Bloggers have to take a lot of pictures. Including a lot of pictures of themselves. It’s embarrassing, but there’s just no way around it.

667

–Bloggers also have to ask people to take pictures of them a lot. (Often, doing strange things.) It gets awkward fast.

runningGreat day for a run! Not that I’m planning on it.

–Sometimes I feel like I’m talking to myself, but I keep writing anyway.

–In the beginning, I worried that I’d run out of things to talk about…turns out that’s not a problem after all. Right now, I have about 30-40 ideas in my “blog ideas” document, just waiting to be written. I spend more time pushing topics to future weeks than trying to come up with new ones for this week.

–My favorite bloggers are very transparent—that’s what I love about them. To be transparent, you have to be vulnerable. And vulnerability is scary.

–Whenever I get discouraged or start to question why I’m doing this, I remind myself that, when it comes down to it, this blog is for me. I can’t even explain how much happiness it brings me. It’s made me a better person, and that’s true even if no one else reads it or gets a thing out of it.

108

–Every once in awhile, I write something that doesn’t feel quite right later. I’ll worry that I wasn’t sensitive enough, or that something I thought was funny was really just stupid. I try not to change things after publishing (I guess that seems shady to me or something?), but if I’m agonizing over it enough, I will.

–Sometimes my heart pounds right before I hit Publish.

–I used to post once or twice a week. Then three or four. Now, it’s pretty much every day except Sunday (and sometimes Saturday). That was never my intention—it just sort of happened. I’ve found that it works better for me to keep the ball rolling with daily blogging, rather than taking a few days off and then trying to get back into it again.

–Every single comment I get makes my whole day. Even if someone said “xkjdl$$%8#–BLERGGGG,” I’d probably love it.

I wonder if every blogger goes through the same things?

Ok, ramble complete. Moving on to the part you really care about…free stuff!!!

Giveaway1

You know I’ve been swooning over lululemon lately. So when I was trying to think of something fun do to for the Big 0-1 (ha), I knew it had to be lulu.

And so, I’m giving away a—wait for it—$40 gift card to lululemon!

P.S. I decided not to join in on Young House Love’s Macklemore Thrift Shop Challenge after all, because I couldn’t think of anything we needed and didn’t want to shop just to shop, even if it was at a thrift store. :) I also didn’t feel confident that I’d be able to get Mase to take a picture of me in flannel zebra jammies.

BUT, you should head over to YHL and check out what everyone else found—like, for example, a FULL-SIZED PIRATE SHIP BED…????

Happy 1 year blogging! I just celebrated 2 years. It goes by so quickly, doesn’t it? The blogs that I love most and enjoy following are the ones that are REAL. No matter what we are blogging about – weight loss, running, whatever… – we will all stumble and fall and those are the posts that really get to me. That is where I find inspiration. I hope you have many more years of blogging ahead of you. I am new to your blog and I look forward to learning more about you.

There is no feeling like getting a comment and knowing someone is reading and responding to your writing – especially from a new, awesome reader ;)

What I look for in a blog is similarities to me and my interests and lifestyle, but with a healthier tweak! OR if I’m trying a different nutrition plan ie. vegan, raw, paleo, etc., I gravitate towards those blogs for the time being. Right now I’m trying to motivate healthy eating and maintaining a running schedule along with my own schedule, so that’s what I’ve been reading…I also look for local blogs, or at least in-state or in states I’ve lived before… : ) loving lulu!!!

I saw your giveaway in the HLB announcements. I’d say my best pieces of advice are to be yourself and network, network, network. HLB is a great place to start.
