Weekend Reads

by Kim on December 15, 2012

I’m tiptoeing around the web today, trying to avoid news coverage. I know there are probably new details and stories about Connecticut coming out, and I honestly just can’t handle it. It’s not that I’m being ignorant of what happened. I know what happened, and I am definitely mindful of the indescribable pain those families are suffering today.

It’s just that the images already in my head are sick enough-I don’t think I can deal with any more reality piled on top of it.

There just aren’t words for this. I was trying to pray about it yesterday, and had no clue what to say. “Help the families find peace,” didn’t seem like a fair request, and neither did “bring them comfort.” In the end, all I could come up with was: “Carry them.”

Last night, I made the horrible decision to watch a scary movie before bed…that, combined with Mason’s teething (4 top teeth at once!), meant less-than-awesome sleep. I somehow rallied this morning long enough to get a run in, shower, and head to a friend’s 1-year-old’s birthday party (during which M was a shrieking, impatient HANDFUL), but now I’m starting to droop again. It doesn’t help that it’s crazy dreary out and I have depressing news on the brain.

On top of all that, I can’t find this stuff anywhere…

mint chocolate

Where are you?!?! Get in my fridge!!

To keep myself from falling into a funk, I’m brainstorming a list of funk-avoidance plans for the rest of the day, like:

  • Making these cookies
  • Fooling around on Pinterest (guilt-free)
  • Losing myself in a Lifetime Christmas movie
  • Reading Mason his new books
  • Buying supplies for my next DIY attempt (and that’s all I’m going to say about it, in case it’s a flop!)

Any other uplifting suggestions? (Yes, of course I’ve thought of wine…only half an hour until 5!)

In the meantime, here are a few 100% non-depressing things I found on the web this week. Enjoy!

–If you wrote yourself a letter right now, what would it say? And how would you respond to yourself?

–Did you hear about the “Pink <3s Consent” campaign? (It’s a prank, but an awesome one!)

–Know how we all have great intentions to do great things, but then we end up just painting our nails and perusing social media all day? Tell me you can’t relate to this. (Holly’s dried cranberries look pretty yummo too.)

–Jenny, who’s lost 212 pounds and transformed her life, put together a super motivating vlog this week as part of her “Come to Jesus” (meaning, basically, have a breakthrough) series.

–Lindsay talked about why she doesn’t do New Year’s resolutions, but she does have one thing she wants to do better next year.

–Greatist is doing podcasts now!

–I want to go buy junky gold chandeliers.

Have a safe and grateful weekend.

I totally agree with you about the news, it makes my so sad to think about all the families, I can’t imagine being a parent of one of those poor children. And to think of the children who witnessed this tragedy. Oh my goodness. No words.

I also wanted to let you know I nominated you for the Liebster Award!!

Kim December 17, 2012 at 12:03 pm

Agreed…there really are no words that can get even close to doing this justice.

Thanks for the nomination. :)

I feel you on trying to avoid the news coverage. I start crying every time I turn on the T.V.! Horrible!
I so remember those no sleep teething nights! Have you tried teething tablets? Those seemed to work well for my little guy. So sad to see them go through that :-(

Kim December 17, 2012 at 12:04 pm

I haven’t tried those, thanks for the suggestion! We seem to be out of the woods…*for now* …I’m scared to see what molars are like!!

Thank you for the shout out! However, I am with you about the news. It’s unbearable to continue to hear about. I keep trying to make sense out of tragedy so senseless.

The whole CT thing is scary… & sad. That’s all I can really say about that. Sorry you had a less-than-awesome night of sleep. Same here, but not sure why. Great job on getting a run in though! Yes, dreary day… those are some great ideas! I’ve been SO bored. Pinterest, here I come!! Have a great night!!
