Adventures in family hiking, pt. II

by Kim on July 29, 2013

Despite all the drama that went down early in the weekend, Brent and I still managed to make it out for date night on Saturday.

This is the third or fourth time we’ve tried to eat at this restaurant, and only the first time we’ve ever succeeded. They’re always swamped and don’t take reservations, so the wait times can be 2 hours+ and we usually end up bailing. This time, we got lucky and were seated in under 30 minutes, right by the window even!

Brent got a burger with an egg on it (!), I got a salad with salmon and a white wine vinaigrette, and we shared an order of cheese curds (the restaurant’s staple). I took pictures of it all, but they came out even worse than the one above—if you can imagine that—so I’ll spare you.

We tried to go to a piano bar afterwards, which would have made my NIGHT, but there was a cover and a line, so we opted for a little pub next door instead.

Here’s a moment from Mason’s weekend highlight reel:

We ordered some rock to fill in the space under our deck (which has been on the To Do List for OVER 3 YEARS), and no one appreciates a good rock pile like this kid.

On Saturday afternoon, I made a batch of Tomato Basil Quinoa Cups for us to graze on throughout the weekend. (Brent’s appetite and mine never seem to line up, so we’re always hungry at different times and we end up doing a lot of fend-for-yourself style grazing.)

Think I put enough goat cheese on mine?

On Sunday, we headed to a local state park to do some more family hiking. (I’m still justifying the purchase of the baby backpack by logging as many miles on it as possible.)

The cooler weather was PERFECT.

My turn on the backpack…

This hill was insaaaane. This is just one of the legs.

At the end of the trail, we headed up this tower to take in the views.

In case anyone is under the (so, so false) impression that our pictures always turn out great and Mason’s always an easy-going kid, here’s a little dose of reality:

We should have known better than to stop moving for 4 seconds. Silly parents!

Easily the best part of the trip (per Mason): getting released onto this MASSIVE OPEN FIELD.

I swung him around a little bit at one point, and was seriously nauseated from it for over an hour. Oops.

We came home to chicken lime burgers (from TJ’s) with pineapple, lettuce, and mayo.

Tropical goodness.

Have you been hiking this summer?

I love the idea of that backpack for when my girl is older. Looks like they have a good birds eye view :). Sounds like a good weekend and glad you got into that restaurant finally!

You guys are such a cute family! Sadly we don’t get much hiking in during the summer in Arizona; something about 110 degree temps just makes it less appealing :)

So awesome you two got to go out for dinner! Double awesome that you got to try that restaurant! Sounds yummy! We haven’t taken our son on a hike yet. We don’t have the big pack and know if we let him walk he’d end up saying, “mama hold you?” Within 10 minutes. Looks like it was a gorgeous hike and a workout!

Ryne gets so excited when I fry an egg for his burgers. haha It’s the little things, I guess? On an unrelated note, your hiking hair is very cute.

We haven’t been hiking at all this summer. We did an awesome hike when we were out in WY in March. Carrying a baby/toddler is a lot of work!!

Mmm I’d be all over that goat cheese! Looks delicious!

We love to go hiking, but we’ve only been a couple times this summer. We have tons of trails around us so we need to get on it before summer is over! It’s going by wayyy too fast! So sad!
