Winter survival tips and bald mall zombies

by Kim on March 22, 2013

I usually hate this time of year in Wisconsin. It’s still cold out (some years more than others, of course—last year it was randomly 75), often overcast and rainy, I have cabin fever like woah, and there’s dirty snow EVERYWHERE.

Dirty Snow

Grey, grey, and more grey.

But one day, it occurred to me: that snow reminds me of something I love. It looks JUST LIKE…

ice cream

COOKIES ‘N CREAM, aka the best ice cream flavor ON THE PLANET. (Also, have you seen the stats on Edy’s Slow Churned? 120 calories in 1/2 cup, not bad!)

This realization isn’t getting my feet any closer to a pair of flip-flops (nor is it making this any closer to becoming a reality), but it’s something, right?

I’ll claw my way out of this winter yet!

One thing that has been saving me lately is (of all things) the mall. When I’m desperate to get out of the house but the weather sucks, I pop Mason in the stroller and we do laps around the mall.

Sometimes it’s dangerous, and leads to things like this…

new clothes

I don’t usually shop at Gymboree, but I had a gift card, they were having a sale, and plaid baby shorts (and submarines) are my kryptonite.

Our mall trips also always include some time in the kid play zone. Mason looooves it.

Mase mall

The first time we went, he just stood there clinging to a bench and giggling maniacally, with an awed look on his face like, “is this heaven??” Since then, he’s gotten more and more comfortable venturing out into the vortex of kids (and germs), climbing on things and going through the pipes. Every minute or two, he’ll look back at me with a huge grin on his face, to make sure I’m still watching.

When we’re not hanging in the play zone or spending money, we’re window shopping.

The other day, as we were passing Forever 21, I did a double-take at their models. Have you seen those things??

There was the “Bald Zombie”:

The “Lean Back Sisters”:

And the “Ow, Ow, my Knee”:

ouch

I mean, does F21 go out of their way to make their models look as awkward and unnatural as possible??

P.S. It was kind of embarrassing taking those pics, but so worth it. I’m considering making the bald zombie my Facebook profile pic.

Haha! Those models are hilarious!
Yes, the mall can be a great place to go to when bored but very dangerous! I used to do that a lot more when The Love Nugget was smaller but always got myself into trouble. Love Gymboree but only when they have sales! Oh and Ayden already has like 50 pairs of plaid shorts for this summer because what else do you put little boys in? Have you heard of Thredup? They sell gently used kids clothing and have lots of big brands like Gymboree, Janie and Jack, etc. for steals! I’ve gotten him a few pairs of shoes and jeans for really great prices and they were in perfect condition!

Haha I always think of that stuff too! At one point in time, someone truly believed this was a good idea…
